Westwood soars to Oakmont summit

A stunning eagle from Lee Westwood catapulted the Englishman into a share of the lead as the third round of the US Open got under way at Oakmont Country Club.

The 43 year old birdied two of his last three holes in the second round earlier in the day and had spoken of maybe finding something in his swing to take into the evening's play.

And so it proved, as he picked up two shots in his first five holes to join Dustin Johnson and Andrew Landry at three under.

Second-round leader Johnson had extended his lead with a birdie on the first but a double-bogey on the third saw him slip back, while Landry started with three pars.

Frenchman Grégory Bourdy, Spaniard Sergio Garcia, Ireland's Shane Lowry and American Daniel Summerhays were then all at one under.

Westwood had made the early move in his second round in the afternoon and he found range early again, missing a short birdie putt on the first but then brilliantly chipping in on the second.

Johnson had the perfect response, however, putting his approach on the first to six feet for a birdie before making a remarkable par save on the next.

He took a mid-iron off the tee and sent it a long way right but after finding the greenside rough with his second, he nearly holed his chip and walked off with his two-shot lead intact.

Westwood then dropped a shot on the par five fourth after finding the sand twice with Garcia and Bourdy both bogeying the first, and Lowry dropping a shot on the second.

Johnson got into trouble off the tee again on the third and when he saw his third shot end up back at his feet, that would lead to a double-bogey and a share of the lead with Landry.

That group of two would soon become three as Westwood holed out from 130 yards on the fifth for his second eagle on a par four of the week.

The players at level par were now in a share of eighth and South Africa's Branden Grace was among them as he made three birdies in five holes from the sixth while American Derek Fathauer had two birdies in eight holes.

England's Andy Sullivan was also in that group after a bogey on the third.

World Number One Jason Day was on the move as he made four birdies in his first five holes, with four straight pars getting him to the turn at one over alongside countryman Adam Scott and Americans Scott Piercy and Brendan Steele.

Defending champion Jordan Spieth was two under for his round to sit a further shot back alongside England's Lee Slattery and South African Louis Oosthuizen.
