Schott dreaming of home triumph in Germany

Freddy Schott is looking to secure a maiden European Challenge Tour title when he tees it up on home soil in this week’s Big Green Egg German Challenge powered by VcG.

The German arrives at Wittelsbacher Golfclub in red-hot form with four top-four finishes in his last five starts and sitting in ninth position on the Road to Mallorca Rankings.

The 21-year-old, who held a three-shot lead heading into the final round of last week’s Euram Bank Open, was disappointed not to win in Austria but is determined to use the experience as fuel for success in Germany.

“I would have loved to win last week but I’m going to use that experience to improve this week,” he said. “It would be nice to finally get that first win and head to the DP World Tour next season knowing I can get over the line.

“Playing on home soil is always special. I’m looking forward to seeing some German spectators this week because the course is looking great. I can’t wait to get going.

“It’s an interesting course because it looks quite straight forward but you still have to hit fairways off the tee and know your distances because the greens are quite small. You have to be accurate with your numbers.”

Schott has had to reassess his season goals following his scintillating form on the Road to Mallorca and highlighted a good work-life balance as being key to his success.

“My aim at the start of the season was to finish in the top 45 on the Rankings but I have now adjusted that to finish in the top ten,” he said. “I’m just trying to be Freddy because certain points last year I tried to be someone I’m not. I’m focusing on doing the things I want to do and I think having a good social life away from the golf course is important.

“I’ve learnt that recovery is key on the Challenge Tour. If I can recover properly before each event then I will have more energy on Saturday and Sunday and give myself the best chance of being successful.”

Schott will be joined in Germany by Road to Mallorca Number Four Clément Sordet and last week’s Euram Bank Open winner Marc Hammer, who made history by becoming the first player to win two Official World Golf Ranking tournaments in the same week, and in different countries.

The action gets under way at 7:20am local time on Thursday July 21, with Schott teeing it up alongside Sordet and Switzerland’s Jeremy Freiburghaus at 1:46pm.
