Mike Browne wins historic G4D Tour title at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson

Mike Browne held off fellow Englishman Kipp Popert and Spaniard Juan Postigo Arce to claim his third G4D Tour title at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson in Texas.

For the first time since its inception in 2022, the circuit for golfers with a disability was visiting the United States, with the two-round tournament taking place at TPC Craig Ranch in advance of their PGA TOUR counterparts competing on the same layout.

Browne, who held a share of the overnight lead with World Number One Popert after the opening day, parred his final three holes in Texas to card a one-over-par 73 to finish at level par.

His score was one better than Popert, who fell just short in his bid to secure his tenth G4D Tour title, and Postigo Arce after he tied the low score of the day with a one-under 71.

In this, the fourth event of nine stops on the 2024 G4D Tour season, four players either held or were tied for the lead across a tightly contested final round.

Lachlan Wood, who secured his maiden G4D Tour title at the ISPS HANDA Australian All Abilities Championship in December, moved into the lead with birdies at the seventh and ninth on Tuesday.

However, after the Australian bogeyed the 11th and 14th, Popert, Postigo Arce and Browne passed him at the top, all getting to even par shortly after the turn.

Browne, Popert and Postigo Arce all made fast starts with a string of birdies early in their back nine, while Brendan Lawlor – who will defend his G4D Open title at Woburn in May – carded a closing 71 to finish in a share of fourth with Wood.

After both Browne and playing partner Popert bogeyed the par-three 15th, it was Browne – previously a gunner in the British Army’s Royal Artillery – who secured his third G4D Tour title in as many seasons.
