Former Scottish Amateur champion Andrew McArthur moved into an early one shot lead at the Madeira Islands Open BPI - Portugal.
The Challenge Tour graduate carded four birdies through his first 14 holes at Porto Sante Golf.
That was one ahead of a chasing pack including Italy's Alessandro Tadini, Portugal's Jose Filipe Lima, Reinier Saxton of The Netherlands and English duo Chris Gane and Ben Mason.
McArthur is enjoying a maiden European Tour campaign after twice previously having missed out by the narrowest of margins on the Challenge Tour - he finished 22nd in 2007 and 2008 with the top 20 gaining playing privileges.
Included in the field are four members of Great Britain & Ireland's last Walker Cup team - Sam Hutsby, Niall Kearney, Luke Goddard and Dale Whitnell.
