England’s David Lynn and South African Keith Horne moved into a share of the lead during the early stages of the Joburg Open second round.
Stoke golfer Lynn birdied the first and despite dropping a shot three holes later he moved to one under again at the par five sixth.
That took him to nine under after he shot 63 on the West Course in the opening round - the first day leaders had all come from the West Course, and would be facing the longer East Course during the second round.
Horne had shot a 68 on the East Course, and quickly set about chasing the leaders down with an eagle and four birdies in his first 12 holes.
Overnight leader Neil Schietekat dropped shots at the first and seventh but picked up a stroke on the par five eighth to sit only one behind the leading pair, alongside compatriots Oliver Bekker, James Kamte, Jbe’ Kruger and England’s Danny Willett.
Two of the pre-tournament favourites, last week’s winner Charl Schwartzel and Ryder Cup star Darren Clarke, were eight under after their opening rounds but amongst the late starters on day two.
