Kurt Kitayama matches lowest final round in Major history at US PGA Championship

Kurt Kitayama carded a stunning 63 in the final round of the US PGA Championship to match the lowest last-round score in Major history.

The American was bogey-free with seven birdies as he matched Brad Faxon's event record set in 1995, which was one more shot under par with Riviera Country Club being a par 71 compared to Aronimink Golf Club's 70.

The most famous closing 63 in Major history came at Royal Troon as Henrik Stenson took down Phil Mickelson in an epic battle to win The Open and while Kitayama's may not turn out to be as significant as that, the two-time DP World Tour winner can still proudly take his place in golf's history books.

"I felt like I was holing the world out there," he said after carding the lowest round of the week so far by two shots. "What my eye saw, that's what the ball was doing. And that's a good feeling. I think just the putter kind of carried me today.

"It was kind of one of those rounds for me that the putter clicked. I was just rolling it. It was just lights out for me.

"First two days I felt like I grinded and I was happy where I was with that one under, and thought I was going to be able to put myself in a good position coming into today, but it just didn't happen.

"But to come out today, after yesterday's round (75) and have a round like that feels great.

"I felt like the first three days I was playing in such windy conditions, and it was so tough to get anything close. And today it was nice, wind was down. Just felt so much easier when the wind was down. And made it a little easier to score, because the first two days it was so windy, and where the pins were you had to play wind on your putts, and that makes it so difficult to play.

"Today you could just kind of read it how they were and didn't have to worry about any wind affecting it."

Kitayama made birdies on the first, second, third, sixth, ninth, 13th and last to finish the week at three under after rounds of 70-69-75-63.
