Jeff Winther turns to 'old classic' to make his move in Turin

A return to a familiar old friend helped Jeff Winther make the most of Moving Day at the DS Automobiles 83° Open d'Italia.

The Dane only made Friday's cut right on the number at three under par in Turin but produced a sparkling bogey-free round of 63 to surge into contention, particularly as scoring became more difficult later in the day.

Winther, who retired from last month's Austrian Alpine Open presented by Kitzbühel Tirol before missing the cut at the Soudal Open a fortnight ago, switched back to his Odyssey Exo Two-Ball Gold putter and enjoyed a much-improved day on the greens of Circolo Golf Torino.

"It was very enjoyable," said Winther, who was paired with Ross Fisher in the seventh group away. "Two-balls is always nice, you fly around.

"You get into a groove - sometimes it’s a good groove, sometimes it's a really crap one. But today worked out, and I did a few switches from yesterday that paid off.

"(The course) was similar to the other days, I thought. It's playing good. You don't get a lot of roll in the fairways, you have to carry the ball all the way. You've got to control your spin. It's slightly different than what we’re used to."

The putter switch was not the only adjustment Winther made following his opening rounds of 70 and 69, as he revealed after Saturday's stronger showing.

"I made two significant changes. I switched the shaft on my driver, and I changed the putter to my old classic. So that was it.

"It's a golden Two-Ball, I've got two variations of it. It worked today a lot better than it did in the last event.

"She’s been in the cupboard for Thursday, Friday, just sitting there sulking, and now she came out and she worked today. It was nice."
