Grant Forrest and Joe Dean share lead ahead of final round in Madrid

Grant Forrest remains in contention for a wire-to-wire victory at the Open de España presented by Madrid after producing a brilliant burst of scoring on the back nine to share the lead with Joe Dean heading into the final round.

The Scot began the day with a one-shot lead but slipped down the leaderboard after following birdies at the third and fourth with a bogey and five pars in favourable scoring conditions.

He bounced back brilliantly, though, reeling off birdies at the 11th, 14th and 16th to reach 13 under par and grab a share of the lead alongside Englishman Dean.

Sheffield native Dean completed a fightback of his own on Saturday as he birdied the last from 31 feet to banish the memory of his previous two holes.

Eight birdies in his first 15 holes had seen Dean open up a three-shot lead at the top but his advantage was wiped out altogether when he followed up a double bogey on the 16th with a bogey at the 17th.

But those fireworks from Dean at the 18th made it a tie at the top, with Joel Girrbach, Victor Perez and Jacob Skov Olesen one shot behind on 12 under.

Forrest, who shared the first-round lead before hitting the front on his own on Friday, was caught at the summit on day three after opening his round with back-to-back pars.

But he got his first birdie of the day from 14 feet at the third before making it back-to-back gains from close range on the fourth to move two shots ahead.

However, he gave the shot straight back on the fifth and had to wait patiently for his next birdie, which came from 32 feet at the short 11th.

That cut his arrears to two strokes, and although he picked up another shot on the 14th, Forrest was now three behind a charging Dean.

But a birdie from 20 feet on the 16th and a fine par save from 11 feet on the next gave Forrest a one-shot lead before Dean recovered from his late struggles with a birdie at the last to reach 13 under.

Forrest, who is searching for his third DP World Tour title, said: "I'm happy with how I handled today.

"I didn't have my best stuff but I'm really proud of how I dug in and made some nice putts, a couple of good recovery shots and all in all a decent score again.

"This is one of my favourite tournaments - it's been good to me in the past - and I'd love nothing more than to go home with a trophy tomorrow."

Dean reflected on his closing birdie putt, saying: "It gave a little bit of hope after those previous two holes.

"But nothing's guaranteed in this game and it only takes a slight lapse in concentration or a bad shot and before you know it you're chasing.

"It's nice to finish with a birdie on the last. We'll go again and see what happens."
