Day two digest: 2021 Masters Tournament

Everything you need to know from day two of the first Major Championship of the 2021 Race to Dubai.

Hideki Matsuyama

Rose battled back again, Ollie rolled back the years, Bob was aiming for the stars and putters were not required - or available - on day two of the 2021 Masters Tournament.

Here is everything you need to know from Friday at Augusta National.

Rose declines to push the button..........again

On day one, Justin Rose was two over after seven holes. He didn't panic, picked up nine shots in his next ten holes and opened up a four shot lead. After 12 holes on day two, he was three over for the round and that lead had evaporated. Once again, he didn't panic, birdied three of his next four and got back to level and a one shot lead. "I was joking, the finger was heading towards the panic button a little bit," he said. "I had a little talk with myself on eight and said 'you're still leading the Masters', and I just changed my mindset a little bit and started to play match play against the golf course. I scratched a line on my scorecard and told myself I was three down and could I go ahead and beat the golf course from that point on. I had a putt on 18 to win my match one up but unfortunately it just slipped by. But an honourable draw." Whatever works for you, Justin.

Class is permanent

José María Olazábal is a two time Masters champion and one of the greatest players in European Tour history. But at 55 and with injuries taking their toll, he had shot just two under par rounds and made three cuts at Augusta in the 15 years since he finished third in 2006. On Friday, he fired a 71 and ensured he will be playing over the weekend for the first time since 2014. “It’s like winning the event,” he said. The only people happier than the man himself may be the fans. Vamos Ollie!

Bob in it to win it

Since the first two editions of the Masters, only Fuzzy Zoeller in 1979 has won the Green Jacket on debut. After a respectable 74 on day one, a hat-trick of birdies moved Robert MacIntyre from the cut line to level par on day two and he enters the weekend seven shots off the lead. "I wanted to get right back in the golf tournament," he said. "I wasn't worried about anything other than getting back in the golf tournament. That's what I went and done. I'm going to have a chance over the weekend if I can post a good one tomorrow." We'll not be betting against you, Bob.

Who needs a putter?

Si Woo Kim, ahem, misplaced his putter in the second round and had to take on the greens with a three wood. It didn't go too badly.

He enters the weekend just three off the lead. Will he even replace the putter?*

Who needs a putter MK II

Viktor Hovland still had his short stick - he just made it redundant. What a shot.

*Yes - of course he will.
