Straka shines in chasing trio

Julian Guerrier, Sepp Straka and Sam Bairstow were Hidalgo's nearest challengers, two shots back at four under par. Straka's round was built around some impressive approach shots on the front nine, none better than this at the ninth.

Rahm beats the bug

Jon Rahm's preparations for his attempt to win a fourth Open de España were hampered by illness, but he was happy to put it behind him as a birdie-birdie finish led to a three-under-par 68, level with Adri Arnaus and Ashun Wu. "Flying in yesterday afternoon, not having touched a club in a while, and between being sick and hospital beds, I was like, 'with the wind forecast, if I could somehow break 75, I'll be happy'," said Rahm. "Had a great finish and I find myself with a great score that is rather, I would say, unexpected."

Frittelli goes to school

Hidalgo's pitch from short and right of the 18th green was perfectly on line but just failed to release down to the hole. While he had to settle for par, playing partner Dylan Frittelli was clearly paying close attention and holed an almost identical shot for eagle.
