Magical Kenya Open presented by absa: Fantasy DP World Tour ones to watch

Feel closer to the action on the DP World Tour by competing against golf fans from around the world in our official Fantasy game as the International Swing resumes with the Magical Kenya Open presented by absa.

After a one-week break, the International Swing picks up again in the continent of Africa as the DP World Tour returns to Muthaiga Golf Club for the fourth year in succession.

First held in 1967, the Magical Kenya Open presented by absa is this week celebrating its 56th edition and sixth since it joined the DP World Tour schedule in 2019 after it was formely a mainstay on the HotelPlanner Tour.

Darius van Driel won his maiden DP World Tour title here last year and the Dutchman is back to defend it, with fellow past champions Jorge Campillo, Ashun Wu, Justin Harding and Guido Migliozzi also teeing it up.

With 585 Race to Dubai points on offer to the winner this week, Haotong Li, Marcus Armitage and Ivan Cantero all have the chance to overtake Laurie Canter at the top of the International Swing Rankings.

From insight into the week’s most-picked players among Fantasy managers, to our ones to watch, we run the rule ahead of Thursday’s deadline to pick your team.

Who are the most backed players?

Sebastian Söderberg, a past champion of this event on the HotelPlanner Tour in 2016, is our most-picked player in the early stages of selection with 63% of players putting him in their team.

Li, who won his fourth DP World Tour title last time out in Qatar, is next on 47%, with Joost Luiten third on 40% after making the cut in each of his four starts so far this season.

There is then little to chose between those just behind, with Spaniard Cantero and Scotsman Connor Syme rounding out the top five on 29% and 27% respectively.

Who are our ones to watch?

Here, we pick out three players in action this week who are worth considering for your Fantasy team selections.

Favourite - Jorge Campillo

It's not often that our players and the bookmakers are not closely aligned but this week the man sixth in player selections is top of the bookies' lists. The main reason for that is likely to be Campillo's win here in 2023 and while Söderberg has also hoisted the rhino at this event, that was nine years ago at Karen Country Club. Since then, Campillo has claimed two other victories to go with this one, secured seven top 50 finishes on the Race to Dubai Rankings and spent a year on the PGA TOUR after earning dual membership in 2023. Söderberg narrowly missed out on dual membership in the past two years and while his start to this season has been stronger than Campillo's, the Spaniard's ability to get over the line with three wins to Söderberg's one and experience on this layout may just give him the edge.

Form Horse - Martin Couvra

The talented Frenchman is enjoying life on the DP World Tour. While highly regarded, he has surely exceeded his own expectations in his rookie season. Alongside fellow HotelPlanner Tour graduates Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen and John Parry, he is one of only three players to have recorded three top ten finishes so far on the Race to Dubai, with one coming in the continent of Africa in the early weeks of the campaign at the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek. He is riding high on the Race to Dubai Rankings in 22nd place, while he is ten spots better off on the International Swing standings ahead of the first of three remaining events. Back-to-back top five finishes in Bahrain and Qatar - results which have lifted him to career-high 271st in the Official World Golf Ranking - suggest a breakthrough DP World Tour title could well be just a matter of when, not if. Only 22 years old, his potential is clear to see.

Wild Card - Jamie Rutherford

Already a winner on the HotelPlanner Tour this season, confidence will be soaring for the Englishman. He backed up his win at the Cell C Cape Town Open in association with Honor with a tie for sixth last week at the NTT DATA Pro Am and consequently sits third in the Road to Mallorca Rankings. That has given him the ideal springboard for promotion to golf's global tour at the end of the season, after narrowly missing out on securing his DP World Tour card over the past two years. Having played four weeks on the trot in South Africa, he should already be adjusted to conditions compared with those who have been playing in the Middle East. This will be the 32-year-old's 25th start at this level, with his best result to date a top ten at the ISPS HANDA World Invitational presented by AVIV Clinics in 2022. Don't be surprised if he improves on that this week.

Looking back - Commercial Bank Qatar Masters

While he may not have been among the pre-tournament favourites, Li again displayed his ability to deliver under pressure with a final-hole birdie to win at Doha Golf Club, handing the 6.01% of players who picked him in their team 221 points. The rewards were made greater for the 114 players who had him as their captain.

Our Favourite in Qatar Laurie Canter finished tied 35th as he maintained his lead on the International Swing rankings, our Form Horse Ivan Cantero finished tied 14th to close in on Wenyi Ding at the top of the best performing fantasy players, while Wild Card George Coetzee missed the cut.
