Investec South African Open Championship - Day three digest

Everything you need to know from Moving Day at Durban Country Club.

Laurie Canter and Dylan Naidoo rose to the top of the leaderboard while amateur Christiaan Maas continued to show what he is capable of on day three of the 2025 Investec South African Open Championship.

Here is everything you need to know from Moving Day at Durban Country Club.

Canter's fabulous fightback

In-form Englishman Canter, who won in Bahrain a month ago and tops the International Swing standings, did not make the best of starts to his third round as he opened with a double-bogey six. But he bounced back in style, birdieing the par-three second before producing a shot-of-the-day contender to set up a close-range eagle on the third. He heads into the final round tied with home favourite Naidoo at the top of the leaderboard after signing for a stunning 68. Canter said: "This tournament's got amazing history. I actually won the South African Amateur (in 2010) so it would be pretty special to win the South African Open and do the double."

Naidoo roared on by home crowd

South African Naidoo will not forget the third round in a hurry after enjoying phenomenal support from the crowds in Durban. He carded two birdies and one bogey in tricky conditions to join Canter at the top on 14 under par, finishing his round in near-darkness. After sending his tee-shot on the 18th into a plant pot, he got a drop and chipped to around five feet, getting a huge cheer from the bumper crowds. Naidoo said: "I felt like Tiger Woods for the day. It's outrageous. I’ve never experienced that before in my life. It was just like an overflow of emotion."

Amateur star shines brightly again

South African amateur Maas showed he has a bright future in the game with a bogey-free 64 in round two and he was at it again on Saturday. The 21-year-old mixed six birdies with four bogeys to sign for a 70 and get within two shots of the lead heading into the final round. He looked completely at ease alongside the professionals, producing stunning shots like this putt...

Bairstow throws dart

Saturday was a long one for Sam Bairstow, who had to finish ten holes of his second round in the morning before getting round three under way. He briefly joined the lead early in his third round after following up a birdie at the third with this tee-shot on the short fourth to set up another birdie.

Whitnell continues love affair with par threes

Dale Whitnell sensationally made two holes-in-one in his second round on Friday, and he was going for flags again in round three. Check out this lovely tee-shot at the 15th.
