Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño made it European Tour win number six at the BMW Italian Open presented by CartaSi so we took a look inside his bag to see just how he did it.
Any week that a golfer records a scoring average of 66 strokes over four rounds he is going to be very difficult to beat, and that proved the case this week in Turin, but it was by no means a stroll in the park for Fernandez-Castaño who was pushed all the way by Garth Mulroy on a stunning Sunday.
The pair went blow for blow most of the afternoon, but the Spaniard had an ace up his sleeve in the final round, holing putt after putt to eventually win by a couple from his South African counterpart.
And looking at theGenworth Statisticsmore closely you can see that this mercurial form with the short stick is proven in both putting categories, with the champion topping both Putts per Round (25.3) and Putts per GIR (1.492).
This from a man who has often struggled on the greens in the past, but in 2012 he has seemingly improved no end in this area, lying a very creditable 34thand 12thin Putts per Round and Putts per GIR respectively.
This is a particular improvement on his 2011 numbers which saw him 99thand 82ndin the same statistical categories.
It is therefore very clear to see why Fernandez-Castaño has fared so much better this season, not only has he stayed fit in comparison with the back injuries that plagued him in 2011, but now he has a putter he can trust and the rewards are clear to see.
This win may have come just too late to help his Ryder Cup cause, but with a title under his belt, Fernandez-Castaño is building towards a strong climax to the season.
