Oihan Guillamoundeguy tees it up this week in the SDC Open at Zebula Golf Estate & Spa for the opening event of the 2025 Road to Mallorca, looking to build on a positive debut season on the HotelPlanner Tour.
The Frenchman graduated from the Alps Tour in 2023 before ending his first campaign on the HotelPlanner Tour 49th in the season-long Road to Mallorca Rankings.
The 20-year-old arrives in South Africa for the first of four co-sanctioned events with the Sunshine Tour with his sights set on one of the life-changing DP World Tour cards on offer at the season’s conclusion.
Two days out from the opening event of the 29-tournament schedule, we caught up with Oihan to look back on 2024, some off-season fun away from the course and his goals for the new year…
“Last season was my first full season and I wanted to win and then make the top 20 to get promoted, but my putting wasn’t good enough to help me achieve my goals.
“I wasn’t sure how I felt about it. I was happy on one side because it was my first year, but feeling disappointed on the other. I was playing really good golf during the middle of the season, but my putting was so bad during the whole season to be honest.
“That was really tough for me as it made it hard to be in contention every week and to get myself into the promotion places in the Rankings.
“I was really frustrated after playing in China because I just missed out on the Rolex Grand Final, so the off-season was important and it was really good for me. I went back home and I actually did a lot of motorcross. Away from the golf course, I’m a motorcross rider.
“When I was young, I had a heart condition so had to stop riding, but then after surgery, I started riding again. I have a lot of friends in the sport who are very fast, so I saw them a lot this winter and we rode a lot. It was important for me to switch off away from golf for a couple of weeks.
“I got back playing golf after those two weeks and I feel like I’ve come into the new year with a better mindset. I trained a lot in my home country where the weather was perfect and the course-conditions were perfect, so it was really nice. I think I did a good job and I’m feeling better this year than I did last year for sure.
“My brother is caddying for me this week and this season and we did a lot of good work together during the winter.
“I’m so excited now. I think this is one of the best places I’ve ever played golf so far. It’s crazy. I really like animals and there are animals everywhere.
“It’s a new year but I have the same goal; to get my DP World Tour card. I’ll try not to think about it though and just play my game and do what I’m training to do.
“I just want one thing now. To get to Thursday and start the season. I’m excited about it. I hope it’s going to be a good year.”
