acciona Open de España presented by Madrid - day two digest

Everything you need to know from Friday at Club de Campo.

Leader Angel Hidalgo set modest goals while Tommy Fleetwood's slam dunk turned into a three-pointer on day two of the 2024 acciona Open de España presented by Madrid.

Here is everything you need to know from Friday at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid.

'Still working!'

Angel Hidalgo may be in with a chance of his maiden DP World Tour win but his first ambition for the week is more modest. The 26-year-old's whip-crack swings with the driver have astonished commentators through the first two days and he revealed he would be happy to simply keep that club in one piece until Sunday. "I didn't have the chance to smash (tee-shots) with the wind from my back," he said of his second-round 67, which saw him to 10 under par. "I definitely think on 12 there was, but there was no camera so no one saw. The guys from Cobra made for me to try to not break more shafts - still working, and I wish I can finish the tournament with the same shaft!"

Joe goes native

Joe Dean embraced the local style on his way to a 65 and second place on six under. His round contained five birdies and two eagles, at the 14th and then via a chip-in at the fourth, and he said: "Par-fives have been very good to me, just some delicate hands the last two days. I think I rubbed some 'Spanish hands' off on me. Great chip-in." Difficult to argue:

Home comforts

Alfredo Garcia-Heredia, in the hunt among the group at five under, is content to just enjoy the week on home soil. "For me, playing in Spain, I love it," he said. "I love it anywhere. I don't mind if it's the Spanish Open or Challenge Tour, Madrid, Seville. I just like playing in Spain, and this tournament I think is the best event for me by far." Asked about his plans for the weekend, he added: "Probably same things I've been doing. Going out, have dinner in Madrid, lovely food. The weather has been fantastic. Just enjoy the weekend in Madrid."

Well that's just not fair

Sometimes the scorecard does not tell the full story. A look at Tommy Fleetwood's figures would show a bogey four at the ninth - the Englishman three-putted from 50 feet, but only after hitting this almost perfect tee-shot:

Ridiculous to the sublime

Of course, it cuts both ways and Jorge Campillo's excellent bunker shot at the seventh took one bounce before rattling straight into the cup - and staying put. Speaking of Spanish hands...

Hat tricks

Tyrell Hatton dug into his bag of tricks over the closing holes, first with this chip-in for birdie at the 16th...

...then this outstanding dig-out from thick rough on the last, though on that occasion the birdie putt stayed up.

Cheers!

Hatton was also credited by Shane Lowry for his improved form after the Irishman followed up his opening 75 with a bogey-free 66 to make the cut at two under. Dinner - and more than a few drinks - with Hatton seemingly helped him turn his tournament around.
